Journey Home for Christmas!
Our journey home began at 11:00 AM Friday the 6th, (2:00 AM Utah time). We made our way to the airport, and there was not as much traffic as there usually is, so it went smoothly. I took this picture once we got inside the airport. The distance from the office to the airport is about 8 miles...so it took us about 35 minutes to go 8 miles!
At the airport, you can pay 50 dollars a person and sit in the lounge, which we do. The next stop is the hanger, where you go if you don't pay for the lounge. We all end up there any way! There is no AC or fans so it is so hot in there...plus there are only about 35 seats total so you stand the whole time.
Made it on the plane!
The airport. The building on the left side that is long with a blue roof is the hanger where you wait. then you walk out to the plane!
A termite mound next to the runway... they fascinate me!
Some abandoned tanks next to the runway.
Lunch... a mushroom and spinach quiche with pasta salad.
We went to the Shongololo Lounge in the Joburg airport because we had a 5 hour layover. They have food, drinks, Wi-Fi, comfortable chairs, showers and bathrooms. It is a nice break!
On the plane for the 16 1/2 hour flight to Atlanta!
The menu!
I got the herb marinated chicken breast with mushroom risotto, spinach and wild mushrooms. It was delicious.
Cory got the braised beef short ribs with sweet potato puree and snow peas. He thought the meat and potatoes were good.
We flew over Puerto Rico in the middle of the night...we have never taken that path before!
Breakfast was a tomato egg bake with mushrooms, bacon, potatoes, and fresh fruit. Obviously, Cory gave me his mushrooms and I gave him my potatoes.
Sunrise over Atlanta!
Another plane landing at Salt Lake with us! So good to see the mountains!
We were picked up at the airport by my parents, Kaylee and the puppies. We were so excited to see everyone! We stopped for lunch at JCW's then made it home around 3:30 PM on Saturday the 7th. (12:30 AM Sunday the 8th, Lubumbashi time) Around 37 hours after we started!
I started tackling the mountain of packages awaiting us, some were for us, but a lot of them were for people back in Africa that we are taking back for them! Then we went to Shar and Riley's to see the car Cory bought me (more about that later) and to see them and the kiddos!
When we got home, Mat and Yolanda showed up with pizza and we got caught up. We were exhausted, the time change is brutal on us, so we ended early and went to bed!
