Back To School and a Red Sunrise

Yesterday was the first day of school here in Lubumbashi.  Being a teacher, I had some thoughts on my way to the office today. First of all, I miss teaching.  I miss my cute 5th graders and my team and the educational lessons as well as life lessons.  Now, we left the house at 6:20 AM and I had to snap pictures of all the students, dressed in their uniforms, walking to school.  The students here are so GRATEFUL for the opportunity to attend school, not everyone here has that option.  They are willing to wake up early, get dressed and walk MILES to get to school by 7:30.  If they are lucky, they are able to ride a bus to school.  I'm not sure how it is decided who rides a bus.  We passed this bus with a tire missing on our way and there was a group of students walking down the street just pass it. It makes my teacher hear happy that the children and parents here value an education!

Again, I will talk about the pollution here. (And on a post from last week about pollution, I added some pictures of the garbage and fires).  The air here is so polluted, you rarely see a blue sky and I just told Cory this morning, I can't wait for rainy season to hopefully clean out the air a little and we might be able to see the horizon and what's out from our house.  Right now our visibility is very limited.

On our way to work this morning, the sun was RED!  Of course, Cory brought up the signs of the time and the sun will be red as blood.  I snapped quite a few pictures along the way!  It was actually quite beautiful, despite the reason it was the way it was!
